Melted Away

PREPRODUCTION – CHARACTER DESIGN

Our Bachelor short film is about the topic of “losing oneself”, inspired by true events. This applies to both the physical as well as to the psychological state of a person. We describe it as the “mental-decay” that the character has to go through. This state is portrayed by using wax, a material that stands for transience, change and protection. “Our film is a metaphor for life: We all melt in some way, sooner or later.”

Synopsis:
A female wax figure is loosing herself in a race against time, trying to prevent her inevitable decay.

The character design should convey fragility without revealing too much about the characters personality itself. The goal was to keep her as neutral as possible: She should serve more as a shell for the audience to emphasize with. She should appear exhausted, but not ill. She should feel lost, but not reveal any specific backstory. Every small detail I added or removed, changed her whole appearance and thus her personality.
The same applied to the design of the environment, which I am not showing here. I have learned that the simpler the scene and the fewer objects there are in it, the more complicated it becomes to tell a story and keep the character’s acting understandable (and in addition the symbolism changes immediately.). It was a major challenge that kept us busy for a whole year.
Nevertheless, it was a pleasure to co-direct this film.
